A Time for Reflection

A Time for Reflection

Listen to the audio version by Dorothy

Greetings and a warm welcome to you! How wonderful to be in the early days of our brand New Year of 2024. Do you see this time as akin to turning the pages of the next chapter of your life, or as a new book with a different title and focus? My vision, while built on the shoulders of its predecessor years, is like being on a bridge, with reflections of the amazing experiences and learning curves of 2023, anticipatory wonderment about 2024 emerging, along with some reality checks! Reflecting on my almost forty years of diligently setting an annual theme, with quarterly goals and monthly specifics, revealed that most of those themes - albeit good ideas, did not materialize into my reality. It was time for some serious self-talk!

Going forward, while I do have specific intentions and know my why for each, an important reminder is written above two large hanging feathers that I see on waking each morning: I take myself lightly! In a talk the late Irish author and former priest, John O'Donohue, shared having heard many sad and painful end-of-life if only regrets, while another response from a burly farmer whom he asked what he would say as his life was drawing to a close, was the smiling response: by the geez, I squeezed the juice out of it. Surely it is never too late to make a change, even a small one, or make a start towards completing an unfinished but important task.

A small ripple can change the shape of water are words by Donna VanLiere in her book, The Christmas Blessing (P190), a favourite which I recently re-read, and sequel to The Christmas Shoes. Trust that a small ripple might be the shift you need for something to show up in a timely way, or a difference you want to make for a greater good.

Anxious and challenged with a lack of focus and numerous re-starts for this month's newsletter, its title came about late evening while watching a Hallmark movie, My Christmas Guide. Earlier the same day I had rediscovered Inspire, the local seniors' magazine, saved from December 2022 and opened to: If I could speak to my 50-year-old-self. Those were the small ripples I needed and next day, sitting beside the cheery fireplace at my local mall, ideas flowed and the first rough draft was written.

If you find yourself in a relatable anxious situation, perhaps recall sage words by Erma Bombeck: Worrying is like a rocking chair; it will give you something to do, but it never gets you anywhere. It was time to lighten up and trust the answer would appear ... and telling myself that it was still early days in January!

When we are at a loss for ideas, or lack of clarity for our next step, trust the Universe has our back, the answer is percolating and about to present itself in supporting us to have the life we envision, and more so! Just choose a favourite place, listen in the silence, and capture insights that speak to you. Perhaps ask what wisdom you would share with another, younger or older, from where you presently are, and for what you are most grateful.

The fireplace of this month's illustration is in the home of a friend in Northern Ireland, beside which I spent many dreamy hours over the years. I am grateful to continually be learning from others, younger and older, for friends who care, for book ideas, feedback, and for the joy and the privilege of sharing Innisfree Moments these many years - including those who created its birthing, enabled its growth and now support its continuity ... I thank YOU!

Let's welcome change during 2024 with a final reference by Donna VanLiere from her Christmas Blessing to words by Henry David Thoreau: All change is a miracle to contemplate, but it is a miracle which is taking place every instant. (P7).

Until next month, when we meet again and are gifted with one more day on February 29, let's see 2024 as a miracle. May our reflections bring grand insights as we keep hope in our hearts, laugh often, and squeeze the juice out of life!

Blessèd be to you ... Namasté!
